Government hospitals are still charging user fees despite government scrapping payment for infants, senior citizens and pregnant and nursing mothers.
A snap survey conducted by YAFM news during the fact finding and public hearings on healthy effects of hormonal contraceptive to women and government’s adherence to the user fees policy in hospitals by the parliamentary portfolio committee on Women and youth affairs, targeted beneficiaries from Zvishavane and Mberengwa District revealed that they still pay for all medical services including contraceptives in public clinics and hospitals.
Some women in Zvishavane said their children do not have birth certificates after the local district hospital withheld birth records due to failure to pay hospital fees.
Zvishavane District Medical Officer Doctor Tiny Mhlanga revealed that they have scrapped user fees and the committee ordered the authorities to release birth records for the affected children.
