CHILD MARRIAGES ON THE RISE
Written by Panashe Madzinga on April 17, 2018
Women’s Coalition of Zimbabwe has expressed concerns over the continued increase of child marriages in the country.
Speaking at a workshop aimed at creating awareness on child marriages in Harare today, woman rights activist and director in the Ministry of Health and Child Care Rejoice Nharaunda-Makawa said a lot needs to be done to change society’s attitude and perceptions towards the issue.
Nharaunda-Makawa added that cultural and religious practises are the main causes of child marriages, as such the women’s coalition has embarked on various awareness campaigns aimed at educating communities on the meaning and implications of child marriages.
Parliamentarians, whose term of office ends this year, were mandated to finalise the Child Marriage Bill, but it has not been passed into an act yet.
