Mines and Mining Development permanent secretary Mr Munesu Munodawafa says the ministry is concerned with the level of land degradation resulting from mining activities, citing Zvishavane as one of the most affected areas.
Mr Munodawafa said some of the mining methods being used in local mines are not friendly to the environment.
He added that the mines ministry is currently engaging institutions such as Environmental Management Agency so they can monitor mining activities and ensure that they are carried out in a sustainable manner.
There have been endless calls by local chiefs, who say they are concerned with the environmental impact caused by mining activities in the surrounding areas as they are putting human and livestock lives at risk.
