Small scale gold producers have been commended for their high performance in the first quota of the year, as their output continues to increase on a monthly basis.

Small scale gold producers last month produced 1.9 tonnes of the yellow metal compared to primary producers who produced 982 kilogrammes.

In March small scale producers produced 1.7 tonnes of gold compared to primary producers who produced 953 kilogrammes.

Speaking to YA FM news, Zimbabwe Miners Federation spokesperson Dosman Mangisi attributed the increase in output to the mechanization of mining operations, as small scale producers now opt for onsite milling which has high beneficiation as well low transport costs, rather than taking their ores to customer millers.

Mangisi also cited the decriminalisation of gold possession by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe as another factor contributing to the increase in gold production.

Small scale gold producers have set an ambitious target of 30 tonnes this year.
