Small Scale miners say the government should review numerous operational taxes they pay to the ministry and relevant organisations arguing that they hinder meaningful production in the sector.
Speaking during the stakeholder meeting organised by ZIMNAT life insurance company in Zvishavane yesterday, Zvishavane- Mberengwa Miners Association Committee member, Mr Kessary Nyathi bemoaned high taxes they pay to the ministry of mines for mining rights as well as to the Environmental Management Agency for mine inspections.
He says despite being high some taxes are subjected to high penalties in case of failure in meeting payment due dates.
He implored the government should consider relaxing taxes for the sector considering its vast contributions to the mining industry.
Last year small scale gold miners contributed 53% of the total gold tonnage compared to the large scale sector.
