ZEC Commissioner Qhubani Moyo has denied reports that the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission provided political parties with the electorate’s phone numbers. Speaking at ZEC’s press conference on Monday, Commissioner Moyo said service providers have facilities where they sell their database to parties for bulk messages and could have helped political parties. This comes after some people raised alarm that the electoral body had given their personal details to political parties after receiving campaign messages on their mobile phones. Commissioner Moyo also addressed the issue of ballot paper printing and told the media that political parties had observed the printing process but some of them wanted to be involved in the printing process.
Meanwhile, Econet Wireless Zimbabwe has denied allegations that they gave away customers’ numbers. In a statement the company said they only share customer information with regulatory authorities such as POTRAZ in accordance with subscriber registration rules and licensing requirements.
