The Environmental Management Agency says over 54 000 hectares of vegetation have so far been destroyed by veld fires compared to 35 000 hectares from last year.
In an interview with YAFM Environmental Management Agency Gweru District Officer Timothy Nyoka said most of the veld fires were caused by farmers clearing land.
Mr Nyoka appealed to legislators and political leaders to incorporate environmental issues in their public addresses.
Somabhula, Chirumanzu, Gwenoro and Gweru are the worst affected areas in the province.
